Protect Our Children

A call to action for every Fort Wayne parent, resident, and neighbor

The Proposal

City officials are proposing to open a low-barrier homeless shelter at 333 E. Washington Blvd. β€” directly adjacent to the state of Indiana's longest continuously operating elementary school and its preschool.

"Our children deserve to learn without fear."

A low-barrier model accepts residents without identification requirements, raising unresolved questions about how Indiana sex offender statutes would be enforced in practice.

What You Can Do

Distance from school entrance
to proposed shelter site
1,000ft

(IC 35-38-2-2.2)
If this project is rushed, it could negatively impact the progress made in revitalizing downtown Fort Wayne.

What We Want

A call to slow down and strengthen the process

We are asking the City to slow this process so there can be a fuller community discussion before any final decisions are made.

Maybe the Right Solution, but Wrong Location

We support efforts to serve individuals experiencing homelessness. Our concern is not the mission, but the process, planning, and placement.

Community Involvement

Community input has been limited. Neighbors and nearby businesses directly affected have not had meaningful participation or collaboration.

Limited Transparency

No independent safety review or comprehensive project analysis has been released publicly, leaving the community without the information needed for an informed discussion.

Rushed Without Clear Planning

This proposal is moving forward without clear, publicly available planning details or meaningful collaboration with the community. The pace has not allowed sufficient time for informed review, input, or partnership before decisions are made.
